Description of Clerkship
Satellite Pharmacy Clerkship (Also known as Inpatient Pharmacy Clerkship) is an introductory practice experience and exposure to drug distribution system in the hospital setting. This clerkship will be conducted in a simulated satellite pharmacy setting (Hospital Pharmacy Lab) at School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. The clerkship will be conducted over 3 weeks period. Reading materials will be given to the students to perform self-learning activity a week prior to the simulation activities which will be conducted in the Hospital Pharmacy Lab using OSPhE method.
This clerkship emphasize on the application of inpatient pharmacy practice principles in providing pharmacy services in hospital setting. The main purpose is to provide undergraduate students the fundamental information and practice experience on essential skills on drug distribution systems and responsibilities, roles in inpatient pharmacy services. Besides emphasis also will be given on the interprofessional collaboration in the practice settings. The student will gain knowledge and practice skills needed to work as inpatient pharmacist. These skills include the use and documentation of cumulative medication records, development of patient database, assessing medication orders written appropriately, perform medication filling in trolley and countercheck and developing collaborative working relationship with other health professionals. In addition, the process of Dangerous drugs supply, emergency drug supply, techniques on providing drugs information to ward staffs, and general pharmacy management will be gained.
