Supply of Dangerous Drugs
Dangerous Drugs (DDs) and Psychotropic Drugs (PDs) shall be locked with key and controlled under stringent security. The key should be held by fully registered pharmacists (FRP) or pre-registered pharmacists (PRP) under supervision of FRP according to Dangerous Drug Act 1952. Pharmacists should check the balance quantity of DDs and PDs routinely to control drug utilization and ensure there is sufficient stock for patient use.

Permitted DDs and PDs and their quantity that can be kept in the wards are stated on the medication lists approved by pharmacy. However, the types of permitted DDs and PDs in VARIES from WARD to WARD. During an emergency situation, the doctors and nurses can directly use the DDs and PDs from the ward and record their usage in the psychotropic medications record book. At the same time, empty ampoules and containers of the drugs used must be kept for the subsequent refill purpose based on exchange basis with the pharmacy department. In every ward and other departments, DDs and PDs should always be topped up at maximum quantity to avoid shortage of supply during emergency cases. Therefore, record books must be updated each time psychotropic medications are used based on order form by the prescriber.

The procedures of supplying of DDs and PDs in the pharmacy department as described below:

    1. Pharmacist-in-charge receives 2 sheets of indent forms stating amount of drugs needed to be top up, the containers and ampoules of drugs that have been used and psychotropic medications record book from the ward/ unit.
    2. Pharmacist checks indent form and checks record of psychotropic medication use.
    3. Pharmacist ensure that the orders are in accordance with the ward usage pattern and record the balance of psychotropic medications by doing “Note“check and found“Note“.
    4. Pharmacist refers to the ward/ unit in case of discrepancy and record the reason reported.
    5. Pharmacist records new quantity supplied in the psychotropic medications register book belongs to pharmacy department.
    6. Pharmacist records the quantity supplied and sign the psychotropic medications record book (ward copy) and indent forms.
    7. Pharmacist keep the first sheet of indent form and returns the second sheet and psychotropic medications record book to the nurse. The nurse has to check the quantity supplied by pharmacist and sign the psychotropic medications record book and indent form.
